The story of Cake is told through three books. The synopses below contain very minor spoilers — if you want to read Cake with all the surprises, you might want to skip these.
In Book One, Marley, Anastasia Cake is introduced, along with the very strange world in which she lives, filled with odd characters: her father and the bizarre old wizards he consorts with, the giant living in the alley by her building, a mysterious ghost, and a particularly loyal stray dog. All of this leads up to a mythical adventure out of the darkest fairy tales, as Anastasia discovers the truth behind her twin brother's disappearance ten years earlier, and begins her journey through Hell itself to find him and bring him back home.
Prometheus, Book Two of Cake, fills in the details of Edison Cake's life over the past ten years: growing up in Hell, fighting for survival and encountering inhuman beings and the spirits of the dead — all in his neverending quest to find the mysterious figure he remembers only as the Sleeper. Edison is accompanied on his journeys by two demons, an animated rag doll of his own creation, and a shadowy ghost that manifests itself in articles of clothing. Edison is a popular target, since everyone wants a piece of the boy who was brought to Hell by the Devil Himself, so he's learned to watch himself in a world of demons and monsters. But when he gets word that the Sleeper may be in Hell, he won't let anything stop him discovering who it might be — and why this mystery haunts his memories.
Book Three, Chains, finally reunites Anastasia and Edison Cake, and pits them against entities of such immense power they can only be thought of as the gods our gods must worship. In a surreal, treacherous world, far beyond our mundane reality, the hardest trick is discerning anyone's true intentions and loyalties — your friends may be the most insidious of enemies, while your enemies may be your only hope. The ultimate showdown between mortal and immortal comes to a head, and the Cake twins and their friends are trapped right in the middle — but winning and losing are the least of your worries when you don't even know how the game is played.
Excerpts from Cake...
Though Book One of Cake is a finished (and over seven-hundred page) manuscript, and Book Two has been started, the whole thing's currently undergoing a large dose of editing and rewriting. As such, I can't supply any current excerpts except to industry folks. As soon as I've got the new versions of certain sections done, I'll be happy to upload them for your reading pleasure.
